Today was the start of a huge journey north to Brisbane for the Brisbane 4x4 Show. With a nice early start I hit the Hume Highway, beginning the long drive from Melbourne towards Queensland. My first stop was Albury for fuel and coffee, where diesel was already sitting at $2.39 — just the beginning of fuel prices climbing as the trip continued north. While in Albury I couldn’t resist showing you the Ettamogah Pub, standing proudly on the northern side of town and always a fun stop along the highway. Next stop was Holbrook, home to one of Australia’s most unusual sights — a massive submarine sitting in a park nearly 500km from the ocean. Of course it wouldn’t be a proper Hume Highway road trip without visiting the famous Dog on the Tuckerbox, five miles from Gundagai. And while I was there, I couldn’t help myself and grabbed some of their amazing homemade ice cream — absolutely worth the stop. Further up the road I stopped in Goulburn to visit another Australian icon — The Big Merino, celebrating the sheep that helped build Australia’s wool industry. After navigating the busy Sydney traffic, I finally reached the spectacular M1 Motorway, with its incredible highway cut through the mountains as the journey continued north. The day finished in Taree, where I stopped for the night before continuing the journey to Brisbane in the morning.
