Yesterday saw the fifth anniversary of the UK entering its first Covid lockdown. Schools were shut and pupils forced to be educated at home, and it's become increasingly clear that - as a result - those children have borne the brunt of the consequences. Studies are continuing to show that reception-aged children are starting school far behind in their developmental milestones, with many struggling to hold a pencil or crayon and some not even toilet trained. We ask headteacher of Ash Green Primary in Halifax, Mungo Sheppard, about some of the situations he's encountered, whether schools should have stayed open in 2020 and what more can be done to support parents and help primary age children catch up.
