Chances are you’re going to end up with the cooler car and spend towards the top of your budget. But by having a range, you are already in the mindset of, I need to weigh out the prices versus the value. So, now you have a price range, a general idea of make and model, and a range for mileage and age of the car. You need all of that before you ever even go to a car lot. And you want a variety of cars you’d like, not just one because chances are, they will say they don’t have it or not at the price/mileage you want. 10:32 - Best tips on buying a used car from a dealer Now in general, you want to be in a place you can take your time buying a car because then you won’t get drained out and salesmen know this. The biggest leverage you have on how to buy a used car from a dealer is the fact there are a number of other used car dealerships out there and if you aren’t willing to use that, then you lose your biggest leverage. Now a huge important thing to understand when buying a car from a dealership is that the car salesmen don't know everything about the car you’re looking at. You can ask them questions but bottom line, they only know as much as they were told about it. In fact, not only do they not know everything about the car you’re looking at, but sometimes they don't even know much about cars so don’t rely on their knowledge. They are there to sell you a car and make you feel like they’re on your side, when really, they aren’t. There's a lot to know about how to buy a used car from a dealer.
