“The Sign of Four” is a three-CD set with impeccable credentials: Derek Bailey, Pat Metheny, and percussionists Paul Wertico and Gregg Bendian. The very idea that Metheny could play with the British avant-garde guitarist Derek Bailey seemed unlikely to say the least, despite the fact that over time the guitarist has shown considerable versatility in seeking new trajectories towards territories far from the fusion genre, alongside Ornette Coleman in "Song X” and performing “Electric Counterpoint”, a minimalist song written by Steve Reich. Recorded over a convulsive four-day period, two of which were live at the Knitting Factory, this three-hour-plus improvisational production offers alien harmonic patterns, in which bursts of nervous, distortion-laden vehemence alternate with surprising passages of tonal serenity with low energy intensity. The first and third CDs feature live material that as a whole perhaps seems a little incoherent, with Metheny not seeming to have fully grasped the idea behind free improvisation, over-loading his personal support for Bailey with angry and abrasive riffs. The studio session, featured on the second CD, titled "The Science Of Deduction", provides more ambitious and interesting improvisations, with the guitarists taking a more refined and intimate direction in their conversation and the percussionists similarly intent on exploring the quieter side of improvisation, also becoming protagonists of one of the highlights of the album: "Tracks," with the use of marimbas and bells that provide an ideal context for introducing the impetuous sounds of the guitars. “The sign of four” è un set di tre CD con credenziali impeccabili: Derek Bailey, Pat Metheny e i percussionisti Paul Wertico e Gregg Bendian. La sola idea che Metheny potesse suonare con il chitarrista d'avanguardia britannico Derek Bailey sembrava quanto meno improbabile, nonostante nel tempo il chitarrista abbia mostrato notevole versatilità nel cercare nuove traiettorie verso territori ben lontani dal genere fusion, affiancando Ornette Coleman in “Song X” e interpretando “Electric Counterpoint”, brano minimalista scritto da Steve Reich. Registrato nel corso di un convulso periodo di quattro giorni, due dei quali live alla Knitting Factory, questa produzione di oltre tre ore di improvvisazione offre schemi armonici alieni, in cui esplosioni di veemenza nervosa e carica di distorsioni si alternano a passaggi sorprendenti di serenità tonale a bassa intensità energetica. Il primo e il terzo CD riproducono materiali live che nell’insieme paiono forse poco coerenti, con Metheny che non sembra aver colto del tutto l'idea su cui si basa l'improvvisazione libera, caricando eccessivamente di riff rabbiosi e abrasivi il suo personale sostegno a Bailey. La sessione in studio, riportata nel secondo CD, intitolata "The Science Of Deduction", regala improvvisazioni più ambiziose e più interessanti, con i chitarristi che prendono una direzione più affinata e intima nella loro conversazione e i percussionisti anch’essi intenti a esplorare il versante più tranquillo dell’improvvisazione diventando anche protagonisti di uno dei momenti salienti del disco: "Tracks”, con l’uso di marimba e campane che forniscono un contesto ideale per introdurre i suoni impetuosi delle chitarre.
