Conceptualized back in the 1990s by former mayor Tomas Osmeña and inspired by Brazil's innovative Rede Integrada de Transporte, the Cebu BRT has been in the works since formal planning kicked off in 2010 under the Department of Transportation, with support from the World Bank. This ambitious initiative spans a 13.6-kilometer route from the South Road Properties to Cebu IT Park, featuring 17 stations along key thoroughfares like Natalio Bacalso Avenue and Osmeña Boulevard, plus an additional 22.1 kilometers of feeder lines extending to areas like Talisay and Talamban. Once fully operational by late 2026, it aims to serve up to 60,000 passengers daily in its first year, scaling to 160,000, with a fleet starting at 83 modern buses and growing to 144, all cruising at an average speed of 25.6 kilometers per hour to provide efficient, reliable, and safer public transport for Cebuanos. Funded by a hefty ₱16.3 billion budget, including a $116 million World Bank loan that could vanish if the project isn't substantially complete by September 2026, along with contributions from the French Development Agency and the Philippine government, the BRT represents a major leap toward sustainable urban development in one of the Philippines' most vibrant cities. Did you know that the Cebu BRT's route was originally envisioned as an 11-kilometer segregated busway from Bulacao to Ayala Center Cebu, with an extra 6 kilometers of mixed traffic lanes, but it evolved to include elevated stations and dedicated lanes to better handle the city's narrow roads and growing population? In this episode, we focus on yesterday's exciting dry run on September 17, 2025, which marked a pivotal milestone after being rescheduled from September 15, kicking off a three-day test run and facility check along a 2.38-kilometer dedicated bus lane. Operating between Fuente Osmeña and the Cebu South Bus Terminal via Osmeña Boulevard, with stops at Fuente Osmeña, Cebu Normal University, and CSBT, the dry run deployed 10 CIBUS units that whisked passengers along in under five minutes, showcasing the system's potential to slash travel times dramatically. Commuters boarded for a flat fare of P15, with discounts for students, seniors, PWDs, and pregnant women, while the exclusive lanes kept other vehicles out to ensure smooth operations—though it led to some traffic buildup for motorists and mixed reactions from the public on its immediate effectiveness.
