Neurogenic bladder is a condition where the bladder itself is normal, but due to spinal cord deformities present at birth—often associated with conditions like myelomeningocele—the nerves controlling the bladder and bowel are damaged. This damage occurs in utero when the spinal cord is exposed to amniotic fluid. As a result, affected children often cannot empty their bladders properly and may suffer from frequent, severe urinary tract infections, high fevers, and urinary retention. A key diagnostic tool is the video urodynamic study, which evaluates bladder function by observing how it stores and releases urine, checking for issues like high-pressure filling, leakage, or urine reflux into the kidneys (vesicoureteral reflux). Treatment typically involves medications and, for those unable to void normally, surgical creation of a catheterization channel using the appendix, allowing clean intermittent catheterization to regularly empty the bladder. This condition requires specialized care, which is often lacking in parts of the South Asian subcontinent, highlighting the need for focused pediatric urology support. ______________________________________________________________________________ Apollo Hospitals is the leading multi-specialty hospitals group in India.
