Day 8 of our NC500 road trip lands on Christmas Day, and what a place to spend it — Durness in the far north of Scotland. We start the day with a visit to the incredible Smoo Cave, and we were lucky enough to have it all to ourselves. After spending time wandering through the cave and taking in the impressive waterfall inside, we head just up the road to Sango beach and Sangomore bay Viewpoint, looking out over Durness Bay — the perfect place to pause for another coffee. before driving along the coast to the stunning white sands of Balnakeil Beach. We enjoy a good walk along the beach and a visit to the old cemetery, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and dramatic scenery. The afternoon takes us on a beautiful drive around Loch Eriboll, with breathtaking views across the loch and the surrounding Sutherland mountains. We finish the day back at the pod for some well-earned Christmas dinner, ready for whatever tomorrow’s adventure brings.
