Wayne Modest expresses his belief that what cultural institutions can do is to sketch horizons of hope in times where there is little to be hopeful for. Our contemporary world has been and continues to be shaped by the durable structures of colonial formations, which have affected the hierarchies of worth, including the hierarchies of what is high or low culture, of ethnography, art and design. Ethnographic museums could inaugurate a kind of thinking about the plurality of ways of being and knowing in the world.
