On a recent visit to California I decided to review some of the local go karting tracks since that's what I do over in the U.K. As far as rental karting goes K1 Speed appears to be all that's on offer, bar this track at Redhawk Casino in Placerville. Fortunately at this location they allowed me to use my own camera so I have good quality footage of the event. The track is a brand new installation costing $1.2 million, being at a casino this seems to translate into high fees, it's $35 for 1 session, 2 for $60 or 3 for $80. Bear in mind that a session lasts around 6 minutes! The track is multi-level and as far as I'm aware is only the second track in California to be multi-level due to strict planning regulations regarding earthquakes. The complete surface is nice new tarmac, the karts are set to a level that doesn't shred the rear tyres but they're not slow either. The only bit you're really going to have to look out for is the downward corkscrew, you can't keep any grip on the front wheels while descending so the kart strays wide. Staff suggested using the boost button to get the back end of the kart out which you'll see me attempt in the video but I couldn't do it so I reverted to just clinging on and using the boost elsewhere on the longest straight. I really enjoyed this track but couldn't justify the cost of any more than 2 sessions. I managed to get a top 5 time of the day 46.417s, I'm convinced I could get a very fast time if I could do a better job of the corkscrew but that'll do for me on my final activity in California.
