PAIRI DAIZA: The World's MOST Ambitious Zoo? (Overview, History, Review)

See my Pairi Daiza review at the bottom of this video description: Is this the most ambitious zoo in Europe, or perhaps even the world? It's certainly a contender for that title. Pairi Daiza (formerly Paradisio) is a zoo and botanical garden in Brugelette, Hainaut, Belgium. It is one of the wealthiest zoos in Europe, and has scored major awards including 'Best Zoo in Europe' which the park has won multiple times, including for the eighth time in 2024. Pairi Daiza has also been certified with three stars in the Michelin Green Guide (Michelin Green Guides: shows you the must-haves, itinerary suggestions, and destinations around the world!), among other awards. The zoo is Belgium's most visited paid tourist attraction. Pairi Daiza was opened in 1993, and as of 2024, is home to over 7,500 animals. The park currently features nine 'worlds' that are themed on regions and cultures of the world, where certain fauna and flora can be found. A tenth indoor tropical world 'Sanctuary' is currently under construction and is set to open in 2025, costing €100 million. A waterpark is set to follow in 2026. 00:00 Intro 1:44 The Middle Kingdom 7:40 The Southern Cape 9:44 The Land of Origins 12:29 The Kingdom of Ganesha 15:33 The Land of the Cold 17:23 The Last Frontier 20:12 The Steam Train 21:26 The Land of the Rising Sun 23:01 Summary & History ____________________________________________ Pairi Daiza, a review: Pairi Daiza is a zoo that has built upon what a typical zoo can be. It has taken the traditional zoo to new territory, pioneering a modern style of zoo rooted in aesthetics, architecture, botany, and the joy of the experience. Throughout the park I enjoyed authentic buildings, varied plantations, semi-precious minerals and cultural wonders, transporting me to the five continents. I really enjoyed walking around the nine 'worlds', from Asia to Siberia - and beholding the animals to match those places. Pairi Daiza has spared (almost) no expense in creating a rich and immersive experience. There are criticisms regarding the size and quality of the enclosures for certain animals, but I am unsure if these are unfounded claims. Some of the 'worlds' are bigger in scale than others, owing to the size of the animal collection in each area. While most of the worlds at Pairi Daiza are impressive, I felt most impressed by 'The Middle Kingdom' (also the largest Chinese garden in Europe) with its striking imagery and design - not to mention its stunning walkway. The animal collection at Pairi Daiza is amazing, while not the biggest collection in the world, it is certainly sizeable (7,500+) - by far its strongest point is the rare animals featuring at the zoo - from the impressive bear collection that includes polar bears, to the playful giant pandas or royal white tiger. You will see animals here that you would struggle to find elsewhere. For comparison, Berlin’s Tiergarten has 1,500 different species and around 17,000 animals. Pairi Daiza is as much a zoo (pertaining to fauna) as a park and showcase of fantastic replica architecture and flora found in the different regions of the world. This lifted the whole experience from animal-focused to putting those animals into the context of their origins. The location of the park in northwestern Europe is amazing for accessibility. From neighbouring countries it is easy to get to; and from the UK it is a breezy drive via the channel tunnel. It is at the intersection/crossroads of many surrounding countries and population centres. There are ample opportunities, if you wish, to stay overnight at Pairi Daiza in accommodation to spectate various animals. Lodgings are throughout the park across the different worlds. Criticisms: This was probably the most wondrous zoo I have ever visited that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone, but it is not without its flaws: I would say some of the 'worlds' - as they are marketed - are more deserving of the title than others. You could say 'Cambron-Abbey' is hardly a 'world' when pitted against the other worlds in the park with their grander and more recognisable cultural themes. The same can be said of 'Cambron-by-the-Sea' and 'The Islands of the Rising Sun' - not every world is built to the same scale (and budget), some worlds are smaller than other worlds with varying numbers of animals. Just something to bear in mind, when the park claims to have 'nine' worlds; look at it more like five large worlds and four small worlds. Next to the rose garden is 'Oasis', a large tropical house, which for over half is mistreated as restaurant. This has a more dated feel compared to other areas of the park.
