In this clip of Backstory and Beyond, host John G. Daniel interviews Judge Freddie Pitcher reflects on his motivation and experiences that led him to pursue a career in law and ultimately become a judge. Growing up during the civil rights movements in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he was deeply influenced by pivotal events such as Brown v. Board of Education and the Civil Rights Acts of the 1960s. Inspired by his cousin, Alex Pitcher, one of the first black lawyers in Baton Rouge, and fueled by his community work, he aimed to be a change agent. Persisting through law school and passing the bar exam on his first attempt, he overcame numerous obstacles to achieve his goal.
