SOUNDBITE: (English): David Norman, Co-Chairman, Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art Department: "When I was called in with colleagues to see the painting we didn't know what we were being asked to see, and when the work was turned around, literally, we took an inrush of air, and we were astounded. No one has seen this painting since 1937, it was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in a Renoir exhibition, it was one of the first major Renoir's sold in the U-S, it was sold in 1886, about four years after it was painted, and after 1937 when it was acquired privately, it's, no one has seen it, it hasn't circulated in the market, it hadn't even been reproduced in color. It's also just an extraordinarily beautiful painting, it's grand, it's symphonic, the flowers, the beauty of the woman, the reflections and myriad colors and light bouncing through the composition really makes it a masterpiece." 6. SOUNDBITE: (English): David Norman, Co-Chairman, Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art Department: "This time in February, while we were gathering property for the sale, the war hadn't begun yet, no one knew when it was going to begin, I found myself having geopolitical conversations with people about the price of oil, whether there'd be renewed terrorism, I kept saying, you know, I just know art." 14. Wide shot pan gallery STORYLINE: New York's major art auction houses are heading into their big spring sales after a difficult few months of gathering works in a time of war and economic distress. Sotheby's will hold their evening sale of Impressionist and Modern art on May 6, headlined by a rare Pierre-Auguste Renoir portrait estimated to bring between twenty and thirty (m) million U-S dollars. David Norman of Sotheby's described how stunned they were when the painting became available for sale. Other major works include three works from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Chief among the three is Degas' "Danseuse," estimated to sell for between nine and twelve (m) million U-S dollars. One of the strong sculptures to be sold is a 1950 work by Alberto Giacometti called "La Clairiere (Composition avec neuf figures)". It is estimated it will sell for between eight and ten (m) million U-S dollars. Another painting with an interesting story behind it is Kazimir Malevich's "Suprematist Painting, Rectangle and Circle," which was smuggled out of Nazi Germany in 1938 to ensure its safety and was recently returned to Malevich's heirs in 1999. The work is expected to bring between five and seven (m) million U-S dollars. Sotheby's David Norman said it was especially challenging to gather this collection earlier this year with the threat of war creating uncertainty in the art market. Thus the number of works in the spring sale is much smaller than in previous years.
