Humboldt County Deputy Shoots Knife-Wielding Suspect Advancing Toward Him

(Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only) Loleta, California — On June 5th, 2025, at approximately 2:16 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call for service at the Bear River Recreation Center, located at 266 Keisner Road in Loleta. Dispatch was advised that a male had entered the Recreation Center with a bandaged, bloody arm and was dripping blood inside the building. At 2:27 p.m., Eel River Deputy Corporal Brown was the first to arrive on scene. Minutes later, emergency medical personnel arrived. Corporal Brown contacted the male subject who had an obvious serious injury to his arm. The subject identified himself as a Thomas Johnson and said he had been in a car accident but refused to provide any further details. Deputy Bradford Anderson also arrived to assist with the situation. Paramedics treated a severe laceration to the man's left arm and advised he should seek hospital care for his wound. The subject refused further treatment and he walked away from the recreational center. Approximately 10 minutes later, employees located a vehicle in a nearby parking lot that Anderson was possibly driving. Deputies Brown and Anderson located a 2015 Lexus sedan and it was determined to be registered to Nicholas Anderson. It was determined that the subject falsely identified himself and his real name was in fact Nicholas Anderson. The Bare River tribe wanted Anderson to be removed from the property. Deputies then informed Anderson that if he stayed, he'd be trespassing on tribal land. This contact was not adversarial and it ended with Anderson agreeing to walk away and leave the property. A short time later, Corporals Brown and Anderson parked near the north end of Kaiser Road, still on Bear River Rancheria property. Nicholas Anderson drove past them, turned around, and stopped at the end of the roadway. At that point, both corporals got out of their vehicles to speak with him again. Nicholas Anderson exited his vehicle, reached into his pocket, pulled out a folding knife, opened it, held it above his head in a threatening manner. The corporals immediately gave repeated commands for him to drop the knife as they moved backwards. Nicholas Anderson ignored all the commands as he continued to walk directly towards Corporal Anderson with a knife still raised in a threatening manner. Corporal Anderson fired three shots in defense of his own life, striking Anderson in the chest. Nicholas Anderson then fell to the ground. Deputies contacted Nicholas Anderson, secured the knife, and immediately rendered emergency medical aid, including CPR. They did this until paramedics arrived. Anderson was transported to Ray Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. He was later identified as 29-year-old Nicholas David Anderson. The investigation revealed that Nicholas Anderson was from out of the area. He had suffered that injury the day before and sought treatment at a local hospital. He was subsequently transferred to Providence St. Joseph Hospital. It was learned that Anderson then walked away from Providence St. Joseph Hospital earlier that day prior to receiving treatment.
