This session was part of the 2023 Water For Food Global Conference held May 8-11, 2023 in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. Drought can lead to short- and long-term human health consequences, including decreased water quantity and quality, increased incidence of illness or disease, increased mortality rates, and adverse mental health outcomes. Drought can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide, particularly amongst farmers. Rural communities are more vulnerable, as drought can take a toll on the source of their livelihood. Despite the significant impact drought can have on human #health, many individuals and decision-makers are either not aware of these potential impacts or do not have appropriate solutions to address these issues. Through a series of workshops and interviews, the National Integrated Drought Information System and the University of Nebraska Medical Center engaged with the public health, climatology, healthcare, and emergency management communities to better understand the research and information gaps and needs related to drought and health. These engagements also provided the opportunity to build and strengthen partnerships among these groups, increased the awareness of the linkages between drought and health impacts, and explored potential solutions that can be taken to address these issues. This moderated panel session will provide attendees a broad range of information related to drought and human health: the cutting-edge research, on-the-ground experience, and efforts to collaboratively address the impacts of drought on human health. Attendees will hopefully leave this session with more knowledge regarding the impacts of drought on human health, have gained information on innovations happening on-the-ground to address these issues, and know how to become more involved in the collaborative network.
