The Cave Without a Name is a limestone solutional cave in the Texas Hill Country, recognized as a National Natural Landmark for its geological significance. Located about 40 miles from San Antonio and just northeast of Boerne, it has been open to the public as a commercial show cave since 1939. Visitors descend into a series of six illuminated chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and other formations. The cave maintains a steady 66°F temperature, making it comfortable year‑round. It is also a member of the National Cave Association, reflecting its long-standing role in Texas tourism and cave preservation. The cave got its unusual name through a statewide naming contest held around 1939–1940, shortly after it was opened to the public. According to historical accounts, a young boy submitted the winning entry, saying the cave was “too beautiful to have a name.” This simple, poetic explanation resonated with the judges, and he won the cash prize for his suggestion. The name stuck so strongly with locals that when a later owner tried renaming it “Century Caverns” in the 1950s, community pushback led to restoring the original name.
