Philippe GAUBERT (1879-1941) Philotis (1914) dedicated to Adolphe Hennebains (manuscript : property of Bernard Duplaix) Alexis KOSSENKO : flute Silver flute by Louis Lot n° 2358 (Paris, 1877) (collection Bernard Duplaix, previously belonged to A.Hennebains) © Les Concerts de Pan réalisation : Colin Laurent // www.colinlaurent.com ABOUT THE FLUTE AND THE PIECE... ALEXIS KOSSENKO : I just played for you an unpublished (and unknown) piece by Philippe Gaubert, for solo flute, called « Philotis ». It is thanks to Bernard Duplex that I had the privilege to get to know the piece and furthermore to play it on the dedicatee’s own flute. Bernard, could you tell us a few words about it ? BERNARD DUPLAIX : This piece for solo flute, only 31 bars long, was written in 1914 and dedicated to Adoplhe Hennebains, who was in this moment solo flautist at the Opera de Paris. Hennebains was one of the great flute players of the « Belle Epoque », he was also assistant of Paul Taffadnel at the flute class of the Conservatoire de Paris and then took over from him. The manuscript was offered to me by Hennebains’ descendants, therefore I own the original. ALEXIS KOSSENKO : I feel like I am having somehow a bit of Hennebains’ soul in my hands ! BERNARD DUPLAIX : yes ! since this flute was HIS flute. It was made in 1877 by Louis Lot ; one uncommon particularity is that the date is engraved under the G sharp key, and that the stamp and the numbers are engraved on each of the three parts of the flute. It is made of silver, with a gold lip plate ; even though Hennebains’ photos are all black and white, we can see this difference between the gold and the silver and recognize it is this very flute he is holding. ALEXIS KOSSENKO : it is very moving to think that, although Philotis was not heard since 1914 (and remained unknown and unpublished), I am holding between my hands the instrument which certainly played it ; therefore the direct witness of the creation of the piece is this Louis Lot flute n° 2358… for which Gaubert wrote the piece !
