Cart-Trak roller rack and Dyna-Flo wheeled rails both offer a durable gravity flow solution though they are not interchangeable. Roller flow products such as Cart-Trak are recommended for same-size cartons, totes, etc. where the container size is closely matched to the roller width. Conversely, wheeled tracks provide an easy way to store varying carton or tote sizes since the wheels extend across the storage bed's full width. However, other variables such as load weight and the carton or tote's shape and style can play a significant role in determining the most effective carton flow solution. Watch the Mallard team test two different sizes of plastic totes on Cart-Trak and Dyna-Flo… and Dyna-Flo HD. What we came out with as the best solution may surprise you. Take a look. Read the blog excerpt below: Cart-Trak roller rack and Dyna-Flo wheeled rails are two of Mallard's signature carton flow products. While they both offer a durable gravity flow solution, they are not interchangeable. A recent test in our in-house testing facility proves out this point very accurately. The team tested two different sizes of plastic totes on Cart-Trak and Dyna-Flo… and Dyna-Flo HD. What we came out with as the best solution may surprise you. Take a look: Tote Sizes & Specs: Load weight: 20-40 lbs. each container Flat bottom with 1" thick lip Sizes: • Small: 7 3/8"w x 11 3/4"d with contact surface area 5 5/8" wide and 9 5/8" deep. • Large: 11 3/4"w x 14 7/8"d with contact surface area 9.5" wide and 13.25" deep. Tests 1 & 2 – Cart-Trak on 2” & 3” Centers Results The plastic tote containers have a flat bottom with provides good contact with the carton flow product. The two differently sized containers are similar in construction and both samples are in good condition. However, as we quickly found out, despite the flat bottoms and sufficient surface area, the lighter weight totes have trouble restarting flow once stopped in the lane. Tests 3 & 4 -Dyna-Flo Carton Flow on 2" & 3" Centers Results Both sizes of totes flowed well on the Dyna-Flo wheeled carton flow; however, we noticed a similar flow issue when it came to the totes, particularly the lightweight containers, restarting after sitting in the lane. The restart issue is quickly remedied with a nudge from the pick face tote before extracting it from the lane, but we had one more option to test to find the most seamless and reliable carton flow solution. Tests 5 & 6 – Dyna-Flo HD Carton Flow on 2” & 3” centers Results Dyna-Flo HD (heavy-duty) is manufactured with wider wheels than the standard version. The wider wheels are desirable with heavier loads, but we've found on several occasions that the wider wheel surface is just what some lightweight containers need to promote consistent flow. Such was the case again in this carton flow test. The 2" centers worked on both the smaller and larger tote while we found that the 3" centers promoted too much bounce for safe, sufficient flow with the smaller totes. We had our solution – Dyna-Flo HD on 2" centers. Final Results & Next Steps As you can see from the test video, the totes with varying sizes and weights are not an ideal candidate for Cart-Trak roller carton flow. We tried the containers on both 2" centers and 3" centers with similar hang-ups and restart issues. Dyna-Flo wheeled carton flow showed a more positive flow yet still experienced hang-up and restart issues when unloading the lane. That's when we brought in the wider-wheeled Dyna Flo HD. The wider surface area was the solution needed to provide the reliable flow and restart that we expect from a properly designed carton flow lane. After testing the containers again on both 2" & 3" centers, the 2" centers showed the most consistent, trouble-free solution. The lesson? When dealing with weight and container size variations, it is best to test. Our gravity flow rack experts will put your containers, inventory, and lane design to the test to find the most reliable carton flow solution.
