Rural Australians deserve reliable mobile coverage — especially in emergencies. But the Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation (UOMO) Bill 2025 simply doesn’t deliver. The reality is that this risks becoming another political headline rather than a real solution for regional communities. Since the 3G shutdown, complaints about phone services have risen by 41.6% and internet complaints by 21.6%. That’s not progress — it’s proof the system is failing rural and remote Australians. We need serious reform. That means mandatory domestic roaming, greater transparency around emergency services, stronger consumer protections, and real investment in improving the terrestrial mobile network. People living outside our major cities deserve the same access to reliable communications as everyone else. Until that happens, regional Australia will continue to be left behind.
