I promised y'all a bonus review this week, so here it is! I haven't tasted through a proper Exceptional Cask Selection flight since that Death By Foursquare session a couple of years ago (   • Death By Foursquare, Part II: 2008 v....   ), so let's hit a couple of boston rounds that have been sitting in the box for a few months. Stats: Foursquare 2011 12-Year-Old Single Blended Rum (Exceptional Cask Selection Mark XXIV; ex-bourbon casks, aged 2011 to 9/2023; 60% ABV), 89/100 Foursquare "Equipoise" 14-Year-Old Single Blended Rum (Exceptional Cask Selection Mark XXV; ex-bourbon and ex-Calvados casks, bottled 10/2023; 61% ABV), 88+/100 First of all, go support Arminder over at Rum Revival    / @therumrevival   , who did the other review of FS Equipoise you can currently find on youtube (   • How Exceptional Is the Foursquare Equ...   ). Let's see if we can lure him off the couch. On to the rums. The Equipoise, named after a 1930s thoroughbred or maybe a term of debate in medical ethics or maybe an early postwar synthetic androgen coupled to an undecylenate group (because esters aren't just for Jamaica), is a Calvados-matured Foursquare. Eespecially when poured neat, you're really getting the spicy/dried fruity French oak aspect moreso than the cider brandy (although there is a touch of apple cheese); served blind, I might guess woody high-proof Armagnac before I guessed rum. It does open up nicely with water, but I still don't like it quite as much as the younger, cheaper 2011. And the 2011 (possibly the last pure vintage release for awhile) is, if you've had any of these in the past, exactly like those: woody, desserty, flake-tobaccoy goodness, but with enough rummy notes to remind you that you're not actually drinking a bourbon and (in this one's case) a lovely wet leaves/lime peel thing that makes the affair brighter and fresher than it has any right to be. Foursquare vintages are a benchmark for a reason, and if you don't own one yet then this is as good a version as any!
