This is a very peculiar disease occurring in certain parts of the body. “ PILO” means it is hair and “NIDUS” means it is like a nest like it is nesterd in a cavity. Sinus is a blind tract. So pilonidal sinus is caused by hair entering through small pores not the skin and then forming nests of infection there. So they are called as pilonidal sinus. Most of them occur between the buttocks there is something called as natal cleft between the two buttocks, where there will be a negative pressure created while driving or sitting together for long periods or moving. So that attracts the hair which has fallen off from the back. It is more common in people who have thick and lot of fair in the back. So the hair which has fallen of will get in between the buttocks and then they pierce the skin and then enter inside and they from what we call as the sinuses, where there will be some amount of infection pus and all. So it will be little bit difficult to treat especially before the era of laser treatment we used to make big wounds and allow them the heal or very big plastic surgical procedure using lot of flaps to close the wounds. So it is used to be a big surgery for a minor ailments.
