"ED MEYER'S TRIBUTE TO ANTHONY NEWLEY I'll BEGIN AGAIN" A benefit for the American Cancer Society January 25th 2003. The year was 2003 in a beautiful retirement community called Summit Greens presenting a gala to benefit The American Cancer Society and a Tribute Anthony Newley who passed away from Cancer in 1999. The evening was produced by myself with dozens of community residents as well as support of Walt Disney World technicians and talent to help raise money to fight Cancer. Many donations came in from prominent names in the entertainment business including a special autographed CD from Barbra Streisand that was auctioned off for $500. When all the proceeds of the event was tabulated after this video was done we raised a total of $10,000 for Cancer care. Considering this was 2003 this was quite a bit of money. Invited guests and speakers that were able to attend was Sacha Newley, Son of Joan Collins and Anthony Newley; Ms. Gina Fratini, Mr. Newley's soulmate and companion; and Mr. Newley's former wife Dareth Newley, along with the two children Dareth had with Mr. Newley, Shelby and Christopher. I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Newley for many years. From the late 60's to the 90's he would take the time to talk with me after one of his shows. He always knew how much I appreciated his performance and special delivery of a song. For all those years I studied his stage craft watching him live in the Catskills, Las Vegas, Atlantic City. London and on many TV appearances. I had the highest respect for his unique style to communicate every lyric to his audience. For many years I performed a tribute to Anthony Newley for many local communities and constantly improving my own stage presence to give a quality visual performance of Newley's unique style. In this video I share with the audience a tribute to one of the greatest entertainers of our time with my own unique impersonation of Mr. Newley. No one but no one will ever touch Anthony Newley's ability to perform the wonderful songbook of Briccuse and Newley but Anthony Newley himself. I received some wonderful comments from people after the show always telling me ''YOU SOUND AND MOVE JUST LIKE HIM". I smiled and confessed "I created an illusion" without giving away any secrets of the performance. I was devastated to hear of Mr. Newley's death when I received a phone call from one of his conductors Jack French who I also had the pleasure of knowing. I have been in mourning for Tony Newley for many years and find it very hard to even talk about what an impression he made on my own life..... On the program of Scrooge the Musical he wrote to me "Dream it is the only way to live" During a very tough time in my life when my father was dying from Cancer I had written to Tony and he answered me with a post card saying. "Dear Ed, Your letter brought me to tears. Someday I will be able to explain why but in the meantime please understand that we are all interconnected and God knows the reason why. Regards to you and your family.-Tony" I truly hope many young up and coming performers as well as music lovers take the opportunity to explore the many talents of Anthony Newley. This video was not professionally shot. It is a one camera shoot given to me from a friend who attended the benefit. More than anything you will witness the love pouring out from the guest speakers in this tribute and a most receptive audience who made this evening so special. Who knows someday we might see on a giant marquee in London and New York the title of a new big smash hit musical called "NEWLEY THE MUSICAL". Ed Meyer
