Concrete Slump Test – Step-by-Step Guide for Workability Evaluation The Concrete Slump Test is the most widely used on-site method to evaluate the workability and consistency of freshly mixed concrete. Due to its simplicity, speed, and low equipment requirements, it is commonly applied in ready-mix concrete plants, construction sites, and laboratory quality control. This test is suitable for plastic concrete with: Maximum aggregate size ≤ 40 mm Slump range between 10 mm and 220 mm Test Procedure Overview 1️⃣ Layered Filling Place the slump cone at the center of a rigid base plate and secure it firmly by stepping on the foot pieces. Fill the cone with freshly mixed concrete in two equal layers, each approximately half the height of the cone. 2️⃣ Rodding and Compaction Compact each layer by rodding 25 times using a tamping rod: Insert the rod vertically in a spiral pattern from the outer edge toward the center For the bottom layer, the rod must penetrate down to the base plate For the top layer, the rod should penetrate through the entire layer and slightly into the lower layer 3️⃣ Strike Off the Surface After rodding, remove excess concrete using a trowel and strike off the surface level with the top of the cone. 4️⃣ Lift the Cone Vertically Immediately lift the slump cone vertically upward in a smooth and steady motion within 5–10 seconds, allowing the concrete to subside freely under its own weight. 5️⃣ Measure the Slump Measure the vertical difference (mm) between the original height of the cone and the highest point of the slumped concrete. Record the slump value to the nearest 5 mm. 6️⃣ Measure Slump Flow (Spread Diameter) After subsidence, measure the diameter of the concrete spread in two perpendicular directions using a steel ruler, which helps assess flow behavior and uniformity. #ConcreteSlumpTest #ConcreteWorkability #FreshConcrete #ConcreteTesting #ConstructionQuality #CivilEngineering #ConcreteTechnology #SlumpTestProcedure #ConcreteAdmixtures #CementTesting #ConcreteLaboratory #ReadyMixConcrete #ConcreteFlow #ConcreteQualityControl #BuildingMaterials
