The typical entry-level job for someone aspiring to work in advertising or editorial photography is The Photo Assistant. But photo assisting is more than being able to use a camera. A photo assistant will need to know how to safely set-up equipment - as well as know the difference between things like mafer clamps and cardellinis, cuculoris versus celluloris, a big ben clamp versus a spring clamp, when to use a mambo cambo stand versus a high roller versus a C-stand, and terms like gobo, net, china silk, scrim, floppy or flag. It takes this specialized set of skills involving not only software and hardware, grip and lighting -- but there are also crucial 'soft skills' that an assistant must possess. These skills transfer well when they move on from assisting to other roles "On Set" -- and will continue to serve the aspiring photographer well in the future to the day they become The Photographer and hire their own freelance photo assistant.
