We’ve got fourteen new songs, and we’ve got a new band. Because I’ve got a new life. My daughter was born and now I’m treading this new path carefully – being a mother, a lover, and a singer-songwriter all in one. These songs have become my signposts that help me find who I am in this new phase. The musical language that drives these songs comes from toing and froing between East and West. It includes traces of Hungarian, Bulgarian, Roma and Jewish traditions, East Indian and African reminiscences, and also mediaeval European music, jazz and improvisation as well as what I’ve learned from the great songwriters. My musical partners have contributed their own musical influences. We experiment, bang our chests, sing in harmony, chant, rhyme, whisper, shout, and then return to our instruments, play, laugh, and we jell as a band. I hope a lot of you will listen to the songs, and come to know me not only from photos and interviews, but through the music. I find being a folk singer is too narrow a label. If there has to be label, singer-songwriter is the one that best expresses my true strengths. Which is why we’ve made a series of videos of the songs for you to listen to, share, use, enjoy, and sing along in the shower alone or scream together with me and the crowd at my concerts. The songs have changed my life a great deal, and I’m excited to see whether they will change yours a little too. The support of these five magnetic men has made me more of a woman. And maybe one of the side effects of the songs is that now I understand myself and the other sex a little better. I hope I’ve managed to whet your appetites and tickle your senses, especially your ears, and your hearts too.
