Comfortably Numb is a song by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released in 1979 on their eleventh studio album, The Wall, a concept album, which tells the story of a rock star named Pink who isolates himself from the world by building a metaphorical wall around himself. The song is one of Pink Floyd’s most famous and popular songs, featuring two iconic guitar solos by David Gilmour. Its story revolves around Pink being is in a state of delirium, induced by drugs and a doctor who tries to revive him for a show. The lyrics are written as a dialogue between the doctor (sung by Roger Waters) and Pink (sung by Gilmour), who describes his feelings of detachment and numbness. The song was inspired by Waters’ personal experience of being injected with a tranquilizer before a show in Philadelphia in 1977, when he had hepatitis and stomach cramps. He said, “That was the longest two hours of my life, trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm.” He also said that the lines, “When I was a child I had a fever/My hands felt just like two balloons” were based on his childhood memory of having a high fever and hallucinating. The song is considered a masterpiece of progressive rock, art rock, and psychedelic rock, and has been praised for its emotional depth, musical complexity, and lyrical imagery. It has been covered by many artists, such as Scissor Sisters, Van Morrison, and Pearl Jam. It was also the last song that Waters, Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason performed together as Pink Floyd in 2005.
