Elämän Ehtoo - "the dusk of life", or directly translated "the evening of life" - means the end of life, the last moments before death. The song describes a respectable old age, a long lived life and a peaceful descent to the final resting place. In the song, an old woman prepares to leave this world, telling how she slowly detaches from her physical wrinkled body that has endured a lot and the soul continues its journey somewhere. *In Finnish folklore, a woman's body was believed to have a mythical power, which was called in poetic songs ”väki” or ”vitun väki”. Its core was located in a woman's genitalia, which was considered to be a passageway between this world and the other. In other words, women carried a lot of power between their legs – a woman’s vagina was a conduit for power emanating from the beyond. With the help of women's ”väki”, it was possible to protect and nurture the fortune related with communal growth and fertility - the growth of grain, the productivity of livestock and the health of children. Protection took place by exposing the genitals to the ones needing protection. Borders of life and death have always been seen as sacred. During childbirth, a woman acts as a gateway to the earth. In the case of an old woman, the power of the ”väki” is closest to the border of the beyond, and a companion at the last rite of passage – death. _________________________________________ Gói is a Finnish music project by Rauni Rannanjärvi, Iida Mäkelä & Samuli Ylinen.
