Banner Elk is a town in Avery County in the North Carolina Mountains and is right in the middle of two popular ski resorts - Sugar & Beech Mountain. Banner Elk is also home of Lees-McRae College. Lees-McRae is a private college with a little more than a 1,000 students. Martin L. Banner established the first permanent settlement in 1848 in the area known as Banner Elk today. Through the years - the Banner's family grew- up to 55 family members living in this area. Since the following area surrounds the Elk River and a large number family members in the Banner Family lived in the area - the area became known as Banner's Elk. Banner's Elk was founded in 1848 - but the name was shorten to Banner Elk when incorporated in 1911. Today the town has an population a little less than 1,200 residents. Like mentioned above - Banner Elk is right in the middle of Ski Country and receives a lot of tourist in the winter months. Due to that - I wanted to fly the area in it's prime time in the winter.
