Today, Sarahjoy introduced the next Yama: Arjava. This can be translated as straightforwardness, directness, sincerity and the absence of hypocrisy. Sarahjoy noted that some translate this as being straightforward on the path itself. In other words, not zigging and zagging into myriad distractions when you want to progress on the path of yoga. While that is a noteworthy effort to make (and recommended), today Sarahjoy focused on the interpersonal interpretation of Arjava: How can we become more direct, more forthright, more deeply sincere in communicating with others? And, what holds us back from doing this? In this class, Sarahjoy incorporated the yoga techniques for the eyes into a practice that she calls “cork screwing down” from the head to the heart to the body to the pelvis. The class included a number of variations on twisting as well as ways to get more deeply into the hip joints. Throughout the class Sarahjoy asked the students to reflect on the teachings on Arjava. Having an integration between our right and left brains will make the Yama of Arjava easier to manifest. Otherwise, we’re often in conflict with aspects of ourselves and rather than being direct or straightforward, we zig or zag and hope to get our needs met with other people. Often being disappointed!
