So you find a shop, sit in the barber chair for a while, and happily drop a ridiculous sum of money because you’re sure it will have been worth it. And then, that long awaited moment of truth, the barber holds up the mirror. With bated breath, you open your eyes, and… NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It’s wrong! It’s all wrong! Where did it all go?! In what universe is it reasonable that the barber took away so much? WHY?! How did your very clear and precise instructions lead to this tragedy? It’s practically all missing, it’s uneven, and it just does not have the soul it did before. You wish you had done nothing to it. You wish you could wake up and discover this was all a bad dream. But as you drive home, you glance constantly at the rearview mirror looking for some kind of reassurance that maybe there is some angle from which it looks ok. But it’s all for naught. Once you get home you rush to your bathroom mirror and your worst thoughts are confirmed. You have two bad choices—summon 3 to 4 months of a type of patience you don’t have, until maybe these wrongs have corrected themselves and all the missing parts have grown back. But you can’t overcome the doubt. You feel you’ll never be able to recover the lost time. And before you know it, reflexively, you’ve pulled out the clippers and buzzed off the whole beard, or at least what was left of it after the disastrous trip to the barber. You feel violated that you paid money to a professional to have this terrible result. The way around this? Trust yourself, and make a decision to maintain your beard totally on your own, making scissors your most important tool.
