Various of peasants picking coca crop on plantation STORYLINE: The United Nations says in a new report that the number of coca fields in Colombia has reduced in the past year. It's the first time in many years that this has happened, but may not necessarily be a good thing, because the production in the fields which are left is becoming more efficient. In 2001 there were 144 thousand hectares of coca, a reduction from the 163 thousand in 2000 calculated by the UN in 2000, according to the UN's Special Envoy to Colombia. Klaus Nyholm said, after being shown satellite maps of the coca fields, that the reduction was to be applauded. Nyholm attributed the reduction to fumigation, voluntary eradication and alternate crops, but the he warned Colombia continues to be the world's primary producer of coca and cocaine. Nyholm said the UN agreed with new Colombian President Alvaro Uribe's plan to continue with measures such as fumigation and alternate crops but said new initiatives should be taken to pursue those who operate cocaine-producing laboratories and distribute the finished product.
