We are currently in the middle of the "Great Unwiring." 🧠 When we talk about AI in schools, we often celebrate "efficiency." But in education, efficiency is a double-edged sword. If we aren't careful, we are heading toward a strategic failure: a generation of students experiencing Cognitive Atrophy. The Risk of the "Easy Button" AI is incredible at Level 1 (Recall) and Level 2 (Skills) on the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) scale. The danger arises when students use AI as a surrogate for Level 3 (Strategic Thinking) and Level 4 (Extended Reasoning). By offloading the "mental heavy lifting," students bypass the very productive struggle required to build durable cognitive muscles. They graduate with polished outputs but hollow reasoning capacities. How we bend the arc back to "AI-Enriched" learning: Protect the "Struggle": We must move from "AI-Diminished" environments (passive consumption) to "AI-Enriched" ones where AI acts as a sparring partner, not a ghostwriter. The AI Traffic Light: Be explicit about when to use it. 🔴 Red: No AI. Handwritten essays or oral exams to protect foundational skills. 🟡 Yellow: AI for scaffolding and brainstorming only. 🟢 Green: Full integration for complex, multi-modal projects. Audit for Sycophancy: Teach students that AI is designed to agree with them (sycophancy). True learning requires "productive friction"—being challenged, not just validated. The Premortem is clear: If we make learning effortless, we make it empty. Our mandate as leaders is to ensure technology serves the child’s development, not the other way around. Let's prioritize Cognitive Patience over algorithmic speed. Are you seeing signs of "cognitive offloading" in your classrooms?
