The Thompson was an iconic weapon, celebrated for its reliability and firepower, but by the war’s end it was being phased out—not due to shortcomings in combat, but because of cost and weight. Early in the conflict, each Thompson cost more than $200 to manufacture, making it the most expensive submachine gun fielded by the Allies. In contrast, the M3 “Grease Gun,” introduced in 1943, was almost four times cheaper, lighter, and far easier to mass-produce. Though it lacked the refinement and craftsmanship of the Thompson, the M3 was ideally suited for the demands of a global war that prioritized speed, efficiency, and quantity.
