The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the most brutal and pivotal battles of World War II, lasting from August 23, 1942, to February 2, 1943. It was fought between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in Southern Russia. This battle marked a significant turning point in the Eastern Front. Hitler aimed to capture the city both for its strategic position and symbolic value—bearing Stalin’s name. However, Soviet forces, under the command of General Zhukov and General Chuikov, launched Operation Uranus, encircling and eventually defeating the German 6th Army, led by Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus. The German army suffered immense casualties, with an estimated 850,000 Axis losses, while the Soviets also lost over 1 million soldiers and civilians. The urban warfare, extreme winter conditions, and siege tactics made it one of the deadliest battles in human history. ⚔️ Key Facts: Location: Stalingrad, USSR Dates: August 23, 1942 – February 2, 1943 Result: Decisive Soviet Victory Significance: Turning point on the Eastern Front; beginning of German retreat from the East #WW2 #Stalingrad #BattleOfStalingrad #WorldWar2 #EasternFront #HistoryFacts #MilitaryHistory #SovietArmy #GermanArmy #WWIIHistory #UrbanWarfare #WarStories #WWIIHeroes #GreatPatrioticWar #HistoricalEvents #1940sHistory #TurningPoint #RussiaInWW2 #WWIIBattles #OnThisDay 📚 Sources / References : Beevor, Antony – Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege Glantz, David – Armageddon in Stalingrad Roberts, Geoffrey – Stalin’s General: The Life of Georgy Zhukov Overy, Richard – Russia’s War Craig, William – Enemy at the Gates Werth, Alexander – Russia at War, 1941-1945 Erickson, John – The Road to Stalingrad Hastings, Max – Inferno: The World at War, 1939–1945 Shirer, William L. – The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich Mawdsley, Evan – Thunder in the East: The Nazi–Soviet War, 1941–1945 Official records from the German Wehrmacht Archives Official records from the Russian Ministry of Defense BBC – World War II Archive History Channel – WWII Documentaries National WWII Museum – www.nationalww2museum.org JSTOR – Peer-reviewed journals on WW2 Eastern Front Encyclopedia Britannica – Battle of Stalingrad U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum – Resources on Nazi campaigns DW Documentary – The Battle of Stalingrad Explained Imperial War Museums (UK) – Archive Footage & Interviews ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: This content is created for informative and educational purposes only.
