To carry his dream a step further, Ray hopes to someday write for a chorus and large orchestra with strings, but for the moment, he's happy with the enthusiastic reception given his performance in his first album for ABC Paramount, "Genius Hits the Road" (ABC-335), and has compiled another collection much in the same vein with this current LP, ""Dedicated to You." This, admittedly, is not the Ray Charles that long-standing Charles fans might expect to hear. He is not singing here with the small group jazz backing that has long been associated with him. Rather, he makes use of strings, a chorus and big band arrangements. His versatility has carried him into the realm of popular music with such success that Georgia on My Mind, taken from his first ABC-Paramount LP, became the top record in the nation and Ray's biggest hit. He can now claim as his true admirers that multitude of record fans, young and old, who have heretofore been unacquainted with the tremendous Ray Charles talent because of their disinterest in the somewhat limited world of musical material with which he has traditionally been associated. Don't be misled, however. Ray has not changed his style, nor lost the dynamic qualities that have established him as America's most magnetic performer. He has been called "the personification of funk, soul, and dirty blues," a gospel blues singer, a jazz singer, a pop singer, "a major American folk artist"-and he remains true to these descriptions. Now, the highlighting of the indisputable Charles talent in a showcase of strings and choral effects brings forth still another facet of his musical gift. New, perhaps unfamiliar, areas of emotion are laid bare by listening to and interpreting Ray's earthy, basic vocal delivery, backed by an unexpected soaring of strings and choruses. Here is an intriguing study in musical contrasts that may very well set a precedent for recording artists who have restricted their performance to an accepted and established style. Six of the songs in this album feature an orchestra which includes seventeen strings, and six were recorded with a big, swingin' band. One instrumental is included (Josephine), spotlighting Ray Charles' solo piano. All arrangements, supervised by Ray Charles, are by the West Coast's outstanding arranger, Marty Paich, whose list of credits include the elite of the music world. Tenor solos are by David "Fathead" Newman. Produced by Sid Feller, ABC-Paramount's director of artists & repertoire, all recording sessions were held at United Studios in Hollywood. In addition to piano, Ray Charles is an accomplished alto saxophonist and composer of hit songs recorded by other artists (Hallelujah, I Love Her), Most of his time is spent on nationwide concert tours where he consistently plays to packed houses and cheering audiences.
