This piece is really a homage to Pablo Moncayo, as the form is based on his Huapango. There are differences, the main one being that the Huapango was written for orchestra and this work was written for symphonic band. The piece weas commissioned by Moorpark College and premiered by Brendan McMullin with the Moorpark Band. For this recording, the piece was performed by Steven Piazza and members of the LA Winds, which is the premiere symphonic band in Los Angeles. The reason that the piece is titled Jarocho LA 2 is because I was inspired by the vibrancy of the element that is typical of the Son Jarocho, which is a style of "son jarocho", which is a Mexican folk music and dance style from Veracruz, blending Spanish, African, and Indigenous roots. And the L.A. part of the tytle is there because, well, I wrote it in L.A., a true melting pot of cultures where many ethnic groups are represented. I hope you enjoy it.
