The walk starts at the entrance to a quarry 3 km west down a rough track from the village of Ugliancaldo. The first part of the route involves passing through part of the quarry workings before entering a beech wood on a poorly defined track that traverses the steep slopes above to reach the start of the via ferrata. We were uncertain if the via ferrata was even open because of the on-going active quarrying and signs stating that admission to non-authorised persons was forbidden, so we asked directions from some quarry workers who pointed out the way. This fairly easy via ferrata ascends 400 metres up an arête of rock at 45 to 50 degrees (occasionally 70 degrees) to reach a col near to the summit of Monte Pizzo d'Uccello. From the top of the via ferrata a knife edge arête often only a metre or so wide with big drop-offs eventually broadens to a grassy slope. Here we followed route 192, a long descent through woods back to the start. The lower part of the descent was in bad condition with poor signage, fallen trees and washed away stream crossings. A thunder storm came from nowhere as we were near the top of the via ferrata and we were pelted with torrential rain and hail as we traversed the knife edge arête, making conditions pretty dangerous. We arrived back at our car absolutely soaked to the gussets!
