What does it actually feel like to create with artificial intelligence? In this video, we break down a 2024 peer-reviewed study published at ACM CSCW that investigates how humans collaborate with large language models (LLMs) during the prewriting phase of creative work. Rather than treating AI as a simple tool, this research explores AI as a creative partner. Based on in-depth qualitative experiments, the researchers identify a three-stage Human–AI co-creativity process: 🔹 Ideation – when humans use AI to spark ideas from uncertainty 🔹 Illumination – when AI helps clarify, structure, and reorganize vague thoughts 🔹 Implementation – when humans take control to shape and finalize creative output The surprising result? Participants often described the AI as “a second mind”—helpful, but never fully in charge. This video explains: How humans and AI share and shift initiative during creative thinking Why people prefer AI support after ideas exist, not before Where collaboration breaks down, and how users work around AI limitations What this means for the future of writing, creativity, and human–AI collaboration Whether you are interested in AI, creativity, writing, cognitive science, or the future of work, this video translates cutting-edge academic research into a clear, engaging story. 📌 Source: Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction (CSCW), 2024 📌 Study context: Story writing & slogan writing with large language models
