NOVA Ensemble (Northwest Ohio Vocal Arts) - Recorded live December 14/15 2024 in Toledo and Cleveland, from their program "Songs of Wonder: The Nativity Through the Ages" "In dulci jubilo" - arr. Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795-1856) Moving several centuries forward, we encounter Pearsall’s setting of the well-known carol, “In dulci jubilo.” An English-born composer, Pearsall spent much of his life in Germany, so it is no small surprise to see his adaptation of this traditional German carol. Much like the previous song’s use of dual language, the original carol is a mixture of Latin and German, with Pearsall adapting it for his own use as a mixture of Latin and English. While this setting begins unassumingly, his use of textures and contrast breathe refreshing life into this melody, at one point even expanding to 8 vocal lines. One can’t help but consider this thick texture a direct homage to the Michael Praetorius 8-voice setting from 1607, especially as Pearsall was well-versed with early music.
