Ancient African Astronomy 🔭 | Somali Star Names 🌌 | Indigenous Knowledge Before Europe 🌍 Did Somali astronomers chart and name the stars before Europe? In this episode of Somali Nexsus, we dive deep into one of Africa’s most fascinating and overlooked scientific traditions—Somali ethnoastronomy. 🌟 Long before the Greeks or Europeans documented the heavens, Somali herders, sailors, and spiritual leaders were already mapping the night sky. Without telescopes or formal institutions, they developed a rich and poetic understanding of the stars—guided by oral tradition, observation, and lived experience. In traditional Somali culture, the stars weren’t just pretty lights—they were tools for survival. The Big Dipper was known as Hal-toddobaad ("Seven-in-One"), and the Pleiades cluster was called Urur or Laxo, meaning "sheep." The North Star, Hiddigta Qibladda, guided both direction and prayer. These names weren’t borrowed from Europe or the Arab world—they were uniquely Somali, rooted in pastoral life, environmental cues, and spiritual beliefs. We also highlight key historical figures like Hassan al-Jabarti, Yusuf al-Kawneyn, and Muuse H. I. Galaal, whose contributions helped preserve and document Somali sky lore. Even without written records, Somali star watchers—known as xiddigiye—used the stars to predict weather, manage livestock breeding, guide ocean navigation, and align community rituals with lunar cycles. What makes this tradition even more remarkable is that parts of the southern sky, like the Southern Cross (Wadaamo-Lugud), weren’t even visible to ancient European astronomers—but were well known and named by Somalis. This episode isn’t just about astronomy—it’s about reclaiming indigenous knowledge, celebrating cultural science, and proving that Somalis were scientists in their own right. 🎧 If you love African history, ancient science, or Somali heritage, this video is for you. 👉 Don’t forget to LIKE 👍, SUBSCRIBE 🔔, and SHARE this story with someone who needs to hear it! 📩 Drop a comment below and tell us: What do YOU think about Somali star lore?
