SOUNDBITE: (English) Lawrence Anthony, Zoo Administrator "When we first got here it was a very different situation. The animals were looking terrible, there were no staff, there were looters everywhere. I mean three days ago we captured 30 looters - they were just everywhere, they've stolen everything, I mean there's not a screwdriver, not a door lock, no electrical equipment, no plumbing, everything, all the medical supplies, everything, was stolen, all the animals, hundreds and hundreds of animals and birds were stolen." 13. Lioness comes through doorway in her cage STORYLINE: Staff at Baghdad Zoo were paid proper wages on Monday for the first time since the beginning of the war. The 35-strong staff received 20 dollars each as an emergency payment from the ORHA (Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance) to ensure they remain as workers at the zoo. Zoo Administrator Lawrence Anthony and his staff are trying to get the zoo back to normal, with the assistance of the ORHA and coalition forces. The water supply has been back on for two days and a generator provides them with electricity but it's still difficult to find food for the animals. During the war and in its aftermath, the zoo was completely ransacked. More than 600 animals were taken by looters and all they left behind were four lions, two bears, and a tiger. Many of the animals that are in the zoo now belonged to Saddam Hussein's son Uday, who kept them at his private zoo. When they were discovered, they were in a piteous state and hadn't been fed for three weeks. With the addition of Uday's stock, the zoo now has two cheetahs, 11 lions, two tigers, two bears, and some ostriches. The zoo is now trying to buy animals from the black market, where it is suspected many of those originally stolen from the zoo ended up. And they are also seeking donations of money and animals to keep the zoo running. Anthony was invited by the ORHA to run the zoo, together with the local staff, until it is up and running again and then he will leave. He is from South Africa where he owns a game park.
