I think the reason many guys turn to functional training is because they didn’t succeed in strength training. They try for years to get strong, but they fail because of following shitty programs (Wendler 5/3/1, Texas Method, 5x5, etc). Then they fall for the allure of 'functional training'. Because it’s an easy way out. It’s an easy way to feel like you are training productively, without the hard work required of heavy strength training. There is nothing more functional about lifting different shaped objects than there is from lifting barbells. Functional training does not exist. If your body can do it, it’s functional. There is no magic training you can do in the gym that is going to make you more ‘functional’. Sure, certain movements in the gym may transfer to activities of daily living a little bit more than others. Like squats may help with getting up and down from a chair. Deadlifts might help with picking up boxes. But none of these movements are ever going to completely replicate life. Because how could they? When do you ever load up a perfectly symmetrical barbell on your back and do squats to depth? Or lie down and press weights off your chest? The goal of training isn’t to make us ‘functional’ by doing arbitrary functional exercises. It’s to build up a large base of motor patterns. To increase muscle and joint strength. Build resilience in our tissues. Improve our mood and mental health. So then we can use all of those skills to thrive in real life and be truly functional. If you have any questions, leave them in the comment section of this video. Thank you so much for watching & I hope this video helped you. ____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00-00:32 - Introduction 00:32-2:39 - Functional training does not exist 2:39-3:48 - Why most guys start 'functional training' 3:48-4:47 - Specificity is king 4:47-9:10 - What to do instead of functional training 9:10-9:42 - Outro ____________________________________________ Written & filmed by Ben Johnson About me: I’m a competitive powerlifter with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Sport & Exercise Science. I have been training for over 10 years and have coached hundreds of lifters to build muscle & gain strength.
