Scenes from the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. The system is comprised of 2 divisions - an underground 3rd rail electrified subway (Lines B & D), and a light rail division that operates in tunnel, on viaducts and in the street. It has evolved since the 1990's in a heavily car dependent metropolitan area that once featured an extensive Interurban system operated by the former Pacific Electric and the Los Angeles Railway. These systems were shutdown in favour of freeway building in the short sighted view that cars would solve everyone's transport problems. During my visit the D Subway was not running and it was just a few days before the LAX Metro Transit Center station opened, allowing mass transit access to the airport for the first time.
