Illustrative map making – trails, walks and journeys

Helen will give a brief overview of her practice as an illustrative map maker and then delve deeper into selected map case studies of trails, walks and journeys. She will discuss the creative process and thought behind projects that show or promote movement while also encouraging pausing to understand a landscape in a particular way. The talk concludes with a discussion of the importance of moving beyond the popular contemporary conception of a map reduced to a series of roads and retail venues on a screen. More often than not, such maps exist to promote the fastest route from A to B without encouraging the traveller to really understand where they are.
