Introduction: Anaximenes was an important inhabitant of Ionia. He is one of the three chief members of the Ionia or the Milesian school. He belonged to the era of Pre-Socratic philosophy. Very little is known regarding the philosophy of Anaximenes because of his obscure and undocumented work. A lot about him and his philosophy is known via the works of other writers on Greek philosophy, specially via the works of Plato and Aristotle. Anaximenes and his Arche: For Anaximenes, the air is the fundamental stuff of the universe of which the world is composed of. According to him aer (mist, air or vapour) was the primary substance or the arche. Arche is a greek word which means, “beginning, first cause, or origin.” He chose air to be the fundamental stuff of the universe primarily because of its mobility, changeability, and inner vitality. He believed that air is in constant motion due to which it brings development in the course of work of the universe. According to Anaximenes, the primarily stuff, air is regulated by the two opposed principles, namely, Condensation Rarefaction Condensation simply means growing cold. It means compression of the air in a narrow space. Rarefaction simply means growing hot. In other words, it means the expansion of the air in the greater space. It is by rarefaction, air assumes the form of fire and by successive condensation, it gives rise to water, earth and stones.
