In July of 1998 Stardust released "The Music Sounds Better With You" that included a sample from an obscure song from Chaka Khan called "Fate". Stardust is a French house band that recorded at Daft House, the studio that Daft Punk built. The trio of Thomas Bangalter, Alan "Branxe" Queme and Benjamin "Diamond" Cohen created a monster that topped the US Disco chart for two weeks and exploded in clubs worldwide. They had just finished a live set at the Rex Club in Paris when they came up on a jam that resulted in the instrumental track for "Music Sounds Better With You". The next day they put down the track and added the Chaka sample. That resulted in kudos from critics who widely praised the song at one of the greatest dance songs of all time. If you blinked back in 1981 you would have missed the original, as an album track it timed out at 3:18 and never was released as a single and did not get the extended disco treatment it deserved. She recorded "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me" with Arif Marden producing and members of Average White Band on hand to play and co write some songs for her. "Fate" was written by Frank Musker and Dominic Bugatti a British duo professionally known as the Dukes. While the Dukes career never took off, their songwriting did and Sheena Easton covered "Modern Girl", Air Supply did "Every Woman In The World", Carol Douglas and The Three Degrees each covered "My Simple Heart" and french sensation Patrick Juvet did "Pas Folle De Moi" and their "Dogs In The Yard" was heard in the 1980 film "Fame" as sung by Paul McCrane. There were two guitarists credited on the song, Hamish Stuart of AWB and David Williams, a session musician who can be heard anchoring Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and tracks by Madonna, EWF, Jacksons, Boz Scaggs and Bryan Ferry. I'm not sure who came up with the guitar hook. "Fate" would have been largely forgotten had it not been for Stardust who revived interest in the song and sent everyone scrambling to find this jewel. Daft Punk never forgot the old school and know that today's dance music owes a huge debt to songs like "Fate".
