"Seiran ~ The Blue Reflection" - from SCARLET NEXUS Composed by Hayata Takeda Arranged by dante Long time no see! I've been playing a lot of SCARLET NEXUS lately, and I'm in love with the game as well as its music! It's got one of the most unique soundtracks I've heard of late, primarily making use of electronic music styles and cool synthesis and production techniques. The composer, Hayata Takeda, is quite a new face in the industry, only notably having worked on World of Final Fantasy as part of the sound team at TOSE. I thought I would take some time in between projects to work on an arrangement of one of my favourite tracks in the soundtrack. This track plays in Seiran City, one of the two major cities in the game, and is underscored by this wonderful track that plays heavily on pentatonic scales and parallel fourths to invoke that very eastern sound. In this arrangement, I had wanted to play really heavily on a more energetic take on the track that made a heavier emphasis on the bustling urban life, so I opted to have a kind of duality between the first half, with a more hip-hop inspired sound, followed by a very funk-rock inspired latter half. I used this also as a means of practicing my MIDI sequencing techniques in creating realistic guitar and bass phrases, especially with the slap lines. In order to add on to the eastern musical elements, I also arranged parts for shamisen, koto, and hichiriki to kind of give it this "old town in a new era" vibe, where traditional elements and modern elements mesh together in synergy. A big addition I wanted to bring was incorporating more improvisatory/solo elements to add on to the original track's synth solo and to sort of extend out the runtime a bit. I redid the synth solo with a bit of my own playing, and then added sections for the bass and shamisen to go a bit nuts. I definitely wanted to make it feel like there was a real jam going on even with all of it being manually sequenced by hand. Check out these links!
