Presider: Fr. John Puodziunas OFM Parish: Assumption BVM Province Text from the Homily By name we are called. From water we are sent to become the eyes and hands of Christ. Inaugural addresses are familiar to us. Some are short and some are very long. Some seem to make an interesting point. Others just go on and on. Some are full of hope. Others, with more challenges. Some are painting a picture of a utopia which all of us shake our heads and say, this will never happen. Today's gospel from the gospel of Luke is in some ways Jesus' inaugural address. But it's different than the inaugural addresses that we are used to. For the ones we are used to speak of things that will come or might come. Or should come. But Jesus' is different. Jesus comes and says, not what will be, but what is. The powerful words, today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. It's not something that's going to happen. It's a reality. It's happening. Liberty is being proclaimed to the captives, the blind are beginning to see. The poor are having glad tidings proclaimed to them. O yes. Really? How is this possible in our world? We may say. Is this Jesus going to come and make this happen again? What is the methodology? How is this going to happen? Let's turn to Paul's letter to the Corinthians. He's writing to Corinthians and reminding us also that we have an identity. The theologians will say we have an ontological identity. An identity that's created with our very being. That the community, the local community, the small community, they are the body of Christ. That we in our small way are the body of Christ and the good news proclaimed is going to happen through us. When we find the strength and the courage to pardon those who have hurt us, who have disappointed us, who have caused us great suffering, when we find the strength to give pardon to that, then liberty is proclaimed to the oppressed. When we remove the obstacles of revenge and hatred and darkness, when we remove these obstacles so that people could see more clearly, God's goodness in the world, then the blind see again. When we have a generosity that brings a certain dignity to anyone who has been deprived or depressed, or oppressed, or pushed aside, or felt like they are nothing, when our generosity brings that dignity to them, then glad tidings are proclaimed to the poor. In our small ways, in our families, in our homes, in our workplaces with our coworkers, in our schools with our classmates, on the streets with strangers, we are the proclamation of the good news today. It happens in us and through us for Jesus says, today, today this good news is made a reality for us and through us today. Where two or three are gathered in God's name love will be found. Life will abound. By name we are called, from water we are sent to become the eyes and hands of Christ.
