Did you know Florida's Key West once seceded from the United States? Key West is the last inhabited island in the Archipelago known as the Florida Keys. Locals love to remind you that you are closer to Cuba than a Walmart when in Key West. The islands are connected to the mainland by a single highway. - the Overseas Highway. In 1982, that one road became a problem. The US Government added a checkpoint causing long delays and frustration for residents and tourists alike. The checkpoint was put into place to combat illegal drug trafficking and immigrants the government felt were arriving through the Florida Keys. Cancellations ensued as tourists did not want to deal with delays. Locals felt as if they were being treated like a foreign nation leading Key West Mayor Dennis Wardlow to declare that if they were to be treated like a foreign nation, they would become one. With that, The Conch Republic was born. Wardlow quickly declared war by symbolically breaking a piece of stale Cuban bread over the head of a US Naval officer serving in Key West. The Conch Republic surrendered almost immediately and requested $1 billion in foreign aid to make up for the loss of tourism revenue caused by the checkpoint. Years passed, but the Conch Republic Sovereign State of Mind remained until Peter Anderson, Secretary General of the Conch Republic heard the 478th Civil Affairs Battalion of the US Army Reserve would hold a mock invasion of a foreign island using Key West as the "foreign island." The Conch Republic responded to the mock invasion with an unconventional defense force consisting of private boats armed with water cannons and stale Cuban bread. The Conch's defense caused the exercise to be canceled. The Conch Republic considered itself a sovereign state of mind and definitely a part of the United States with a motto "The mitigation of world tension through the exercise of humor." Today, the Conch Republic's secession is celebrated with several events throughout the year, including a week-long festival that raises money for local charities, as they live the slogan, "We seceded where others failed." 🐚 🐚 🐚 🐚 🐚 🐚 🐚 🐚 🐚 Follow along on our RV journeys!
