In April 1945, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson accepted President Truman’s appointment as chief prosecutor of Nazi war criminals. That spring and summer, Jackson balanced his Supreme Court duties with diplomacy in London, legal preparation across Europe, and high-level meetings with world leaders. By September 1945, Jackson briefly returned to Washington—not to resume Court work, but to consult with the president and prepare for the monumental Nuremberg Trials. His decision to take self-granted leave and miss a full Supreme Court Term was unprecedented in American history. On the 80th anniversary of this visit, John Q. Barrett—Jackson biographer, St. John’s University law professor, and fellow at the Robert H. Jackson Center—recounts these remarkable events and the challenges Jackson faced on the road to Nuremberg. Speaker: John Q. Barrett, Benjamin N. Cardozo Professor of Law, St. John’s University; Elizabeth S. Lenna Fellow, Robert H.
