“I didn’t want my illness to define me. I wanted to work, to feel capable — and SIUT made that possible.” Since 2008, Mohammad Fahim has been a regular at SIUT, where he began dialysis after both his kidneys failed. What could have been the beginning of a life constrained by illness, Fahim chose to see as a turning point. He accepted that dialysis would now be part of his life — but he refused to let it limit him. At SIUT, no patient faces their illness alone. Recognizing Fahim’s resolve and need for independence, the Patient Welfare Department stepped in with a unique opportunity: they offered to train him in sewing, so he could earn a livelihood as a tailor — right within the walls of SIUT. This not only allowed Fahim to support himself financially, but also ensured that his dialysis sessions — which occupied two days every week—wouldn’t stand in the way of his work. Since 2009, Fahim has remained devoted to his craft. His days are filled with the steady rhythm of needle and thread, stitched together by purpose and pride. He says his work makes him feel active and fulfilled—a reminder that illness may shape your life, but it doesn’t have to limit it. Fahim’s story is one of quiet courage and unwavering willpower. It is people like him who embody the spirit of SIUT — where dignity, strength, and opportunity go hand in hand with care.
